Eating Disorders Takes No Summer Break

-Students and Athletes At Risk-

June 27, 2007. Williamsville, N.Y. Avalon Centers for Eating Disorders sees the largest increase in referral activity in the summer months when college and high school students are on a break from classes. Studies have reported that more than 25% of college women engage in bingeing and purging behaviors as a form of weight management. Further, other studies report that 10.9% -16% of college women and 4.0%-6.0% of college males are at risk for serious eating disorders.

“When you look at the pressures of achieving in both high school and college combined with the desire to fit in to a peer group, for many students eating behaviors are symptomatic of emotional and psychological instability. We often see these behaviors mixed with alcohol and drug abuse and depression is common as well,” stated Jayne S. Haley, R.N., executive director of Avalon Centers in Williamsville, New York. Avalon Centers offers outpatient and partial hospitalization programs for adolescents 14 to 18 and for adults. The partial hospitalization program provides a more intensive level of care Monday through Friday for 7.5 hours of programming per day – all under the supervision of psychiatrists Dr. Maria Cartegena and Dr. Maria Nickolova from Suburban Psychiatric Associates.
“The summer break offers students a chance to not have to choose between school and treatment. Additionally, more family support is usually available and recovery begins before the first new class in the fall. We encourage family and friends to help a loved one get the help they need as soon as possible because early intervention is critical,” Haley stated.

The admission process starts with a telephone call or e-mail to the intake staff at Avalon Centers. Many of Avalon’s patients come from outside of New York and from Canada. Most insurance companies cover the treatment and apartment-style housing is available for those from out of the area.
